Prince Harry has made it a priority to protect his wife Meghan Markle and son Archie — following the example his mother, Princess Diana, provided. A 2019 biography about Prince Harry revealed that Princess Diana practiced the same for her family, as he revealed the “most important thing” his mother ever did for him.
Prince Harry shared that he misses his mom every day
In a heartbreaking interview for the documentary Harry & Meghan: An African Journey, Prince Harry opened up about feeling the loss of his mother every day.
He told interviewer Tom Brady that the pain of her tragicdeath is “a wound that festers.”
Prince Harry explained: “I think being part of this family, in this role, in this job, every single time I see a camera, every single time I hear a click, every single time I see a flash, it takes me straight back, so in that respect it’s the worst reminder of her life as opposed to the best.”
The most important thing Princess Diana did for Prince Harry
In the 2019 biography Harry: Conversations with the Prince, author Angela Levin noted how Prince Harry shared with her something that his mother did for him that he holds in great regard. Levin noted, “He told me that the most important thing she ever did for him was ‘keep me safe.’”
She added: “It was one of many poignant moments during ourconversation. This one goes straight to the heart of every child, rich or poor.Children need parents who make them feel safe and give them the rightenvironment in which to grow and flourish. They also need to feel they areaccepted and loved for who they are.”
Levin continued: “Without his mother, who died when he wastwelve years old, Harry has had a really tough time.”
His mother’s love and protection were vital
Diana’s close friend Richard Kay explained to the Daily Mail in 2018 that Princess Diana “poured more love and attention into Harry” in order to “compensate” for any preferential treatment that Prince William received as he was “destined to be King, was marked from birth for special attention.”
Levin further noted that Princess Diana’s “death changed Harry from being an adorable mischievous boy who was beginning to comprehend what it meant to be third in line to the throne and forever one large step behind his big brother, into a willful impulsive pre-teen who, as he grew, behaved badly, rarely handed in his school work on time, drank and smoked too much, and connected with too many unsuitable girls.”
She described Prince Harry as on a “mission toself-destruct” and “a catastrophe waiting to happen” in the years after hismother’s death, until he began to settle down when he was in the army.
Levin noted: “His ongoing longing to please his mother andremain a good boy in her eyes is the primary reason he has come back from hispersonal abyss.”
He’s protecting his family like his mother did
During the documentary, Prince Harry remarked how important it is for him to protect Markle and Archie from public and media scrutiny, noting, “My mum clearly taught me a certain set of values of which I always try and uphold, despite the role and the job… I think I will always protect my family, and now I have a family to protect.”
Prince Harry added: “Everything that she went through andwhat happened to her is incredibly raw every single day, and that is not beingme being paranoid. That’s just me not wanting a repeat of the past.”
He continued: “If anybody else knew what I knew, be it a fatheror be it a husband, be it anyone, you would probably be doing exactly what I amdoing as well.”
