Meghan Markle has been named Britain's top social climber by society magazine Tatler.

The piece says the Duchess of Sussex has reached 'the pinnacle of the greasy pole' by marrying Prince Harry and becoming a member of the Royal Family.

Their list, published in the October issue which hits the shelves today, says that while it's not a 'rags-to-riches tale' there is a 'Ralph & Russo-clad beacon of change'.

Former footballer Jamie Redknapp, House of Commons Speaker John Bercow and model Jerry Hall also made the list.

About Meghan, the piece states: "The pinnacle of the greasy pole.

"Not quite a rags-to-riches tale (she was privately educated and her scapegrace father won an Emmy for lighting direction) but the Ralph & Russo-clad beacon of change has found a role that suits her to perfection: a tungsten toughie to drag the royal family into the 21st century."

It's not the first time the Duchess has been called a social climber, and Piers Morgan described her as one after claiming he ditched her after becoming royal.

He says they went out in 2016, and he couple of pints of real ale while she stuck to dirty martinis.

He said: "It was purely platonic I hasten to add. She went in that cab that night to a party Prince Harry was at and the next night she went on the date with him.

"I never heard from her again. Ever. I don't like people that behave like that. It's kind of rude. It showed me that she, I'm afraid, is probably a bit of a social climber."

Meghan's half-sister Samantha Grant, who changed her surname to Markle after the Royal Wedding, also said that the Duchess had an "ambition" to become a princess.

Speaking to the Sun in 2017, she said: "Hollywood has changed her. I think her ambition is to become a princess.

"It was something she dreamed of as a girl when we watched the royals on TV. She always preferred Harry — she has a soft spot for gingers.”

John Bercow came in second place on Tatler's list after Meghan, with the piece stating: "Notoriously fond of taxis, perhaps because his dad drove one.

"Now so great (if not so good), some wonder if he'll ever relinquish his Commons Speakership."

Model Jerry Hall is in third place, with the piece reading: "The shift from violent, alcoholic trucker dad in Texas to dating Bryan Ferry and Mick Jagger was capped by marrying billionaire media magnate Rupert Murdoch."

Robbie William and Ayda Pield's six-year-old daughter Theodora Williams, known as Teddy, also made the list after acting as bridesmaid at Princess Eugenie's wedding to Jack Brooksbank last year.

She looked adorable in her white dress alongside royals Princess Charlotte, Mia Tindall, Maud Windsor, and Savannah and Isla Phillips.
