Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex tied the knot in a lavish ceremony at St. George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle in 2018. The affair was a star-studded event with plenty of celebrities in attendance and millions of people around the globe tuning in to watch the prince and former Suits star say “I do.” But less than two years after their nuptials, the duke and duchess decided to step down as senior royals.
Now one of the women who helped create Meghan’s wedding dress has revealed that Harry’s bride was not ready for royal life when she walked down the aisle.
Meghan Markle’s Givenchy dress
Many royal fans remember exactly what Meghan’s gown looked like.
The Duchess of Sussex donned a Givenchy Clare Waight Keller creation. CNN noted that a statement from Kensington Palace at the time said Meghan was a fan of Waight Keller’s “timeless and elegant aesthetic, impeccable tailoring, and relaxed demeanor.”
The dress was made of ivory silk and had an A-line silhouette with a slightly off-the-shoulder bateau neckline and fitted three-quarter-sleeves. It also featured a train and was paired with a 16-foot silk tulle veil. The stunning embroidery on that veil was done by Chloe Savage.
The woman who embroidered the gown said the duchess wasn’t ready for royal life
Savage, who also worked on Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge’s Alexander McQueen wedding gown, is responsible for the hand-stitching of California poppies, ears of corn, Commonwealth flowers, and garden flowers on Meghan’s veil.
Savage spoke to Insider about the Duchess of Sussex and said she believes Meghan wasn’t ready for a role in the royal family.
“I think she misjudged the role,” Savage told the publication. “The royal family has broken people before. Kate had plenty of time to adapt and adjust to it. They gave her time, whereas Meghan sort of dived in headfirst.”
Savage continued: “It virtually broke [Princess] Diana. It broke Sarah Ferguson. It has broken people before. I know it’s looser now than it used to be, but even then, I don’t think [Meghan] was prepared for the things she could and couldn’t do, say, and wear.
“She could have carved herself an outstanding role, but I think she found the whole thing very difficult. She’s always been able to do as she’s pleased when she’s pleased, and unfortunately, with the royal family, granny rules — quite simply.”
Since stepping down Meghan and Harry have settled in California
After renting Tyler Perry’s Beverly Hills estate when they first moved to California, the Sussexes went house hunting and purchased a $14 million Santa Barbara mansion nicknamed “The Chateau.”
The home is 18,000 square feet and sits on five acres of land. Hello! noted that it has 16 bathrooms, nine bedrooms, as well as a separate guest house with two bedrooms and two bathrooms. There’s also a library, a sauna, a wine cellar, a game room, a gym, tennis courts, and an arcade.
