The Daily Express Green Britain Needs You campaign is calling for Zero for Zero – zero VAT on products that help get to Net Zero.

And a survey of nearly 20,000 Britons for WWF and the Demos think tank revealed 94 per cent back a moderate carbon tax on manufacturing and construction businesses that create pollution.

There was a similar level of support for better public transport and a comprehensive charging network for electric cars and vans.

Taxes on frequent fliers and more help to switch to a plant-based diet were also popular.

Isabella O’Dowd, of WWF, said: “At present, the whole tax system, including VAT, does not do enough to create an incentive for a shift to lower carbon behaviours and activities.”

Currently, electric cars carry the same 20 per cent VAT as petrol and diesel vehicles. Solar panels can be taxed at 20 per cent but burning coal or gas at home carries just 5 per cent.

Refurbishing or insulating your home incurs 20 per cent VAT, whereas building a new one is zero-rated.

The Institute for Fiscal Studies recently slammed the “wildly inconsistent incentives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions” set out in the UK’s “fiendishly complex” climate policy.
