From ditching halogen lights to not leaving appliances on standby, here are some basic ways to go greener . . .
DITCH HALOGEN: Shops are no longer allowed to sell energy-draining halogen light bulbs, but you can still use the ones you have. When they run out, it’s time to switch to LED. These bulbs are more efficient and cost less in electricity. Experts at The Energy Saving Trust say replacing halogen bulbs with LED lights at home reduces carbon dioxide emissions by 40kg a year. That’s the same as driving your car 140 miles.
Save: Up to £3 per bulb per year
ROLL WITH IT: Switch to eco-friendly toilet roll. It might look pricey at first, but it can be cheaper than some brands. The Cheeky Panda is selling nine rolls for £5.98, reduced from £7.20. Who Gives A Crap has 48 rolls for £36 — which is 19p per 100 sheets. A 16-roll pack of Andrex Supreme Quilts is 37p per 100 sheets at Tesco.

LOOK AT LABELS: When it’s time to buy a new household appliance, look for the energy label. Energy-efficient washing machines and dryers help to save money. The energy-efficient scale usually goes from A to G. Choosing even a D-rated fridge-freezer over a G-rated one can save 650kg in carbon dioxide emissions.
Save: About £25 a year over the 17-year lifespan of a fridge-freezer
SIGN UP FOR HELP: Try using the free energy-saving app Loop. It links with your household smart meter to give tips for saving energy. On average, customers cut electricity usage by ten per cent. Visit loop.homes to sign up for free.
Save: £70 a year on the average electricity bill
DON’T STAND BY: Switch off electricals at the socket, rather than leaving them on standby. It shaves pounds off your electricity bill.
