It may still be lockdown, but there is a little more love about, thanks to the fact that First Dates has returned to our screens.

The hit Channel 4 show is a one of the most heartwarming and funny TV series. and sees daters get to know each other over dinner, with varying degrees of romantic success.

From handsome maître d Fred Siriex, to wise bartender Merlin Griffiths, we feel like we are regulars in the restaurant without ever actually having set foot inside.

But whether or not each diner falls in love, one question we have always pondered is if the contestants get paid to participate?

Does First Dates pay the daters?

Contestants on First Dates do not receive a fee to be on the show.

However, if you are thinking of signing up to the experience, the application takes a long time, so you have got to be committed.

Do the daters receive money for the restaurant bill?

The show frequently prompts debates about bill etiquette, with awkward moments arising when its time to reach for wallets.

That being said, you may be surprised to learn that each contestant is given £25 to go towards their meal.

However, if the dinner bill ends up coming to over £50 it is of course up to the diners who pays more, which is probably where the problems arise.

A spokesman for First Dates, explained to Bustle: “Every dater who visits the restaurant is given a £25 allowance towards the cost of their meal.

“If the meal costs more than the £25 allowance then the dater or couple then decide between them how to settle the outstanding restaurant bill.

“Daters receive no appearance fee.”
