Prince William will front a mental health documentary to be aired on the BBC next month, it was announced today.

The one-off programme, currently titled Tackling Mental Health With the Duke of Cambridge, will see the prince examine ‘men’s mental health through the prism of football’.

Cameras followed the Duke of Cambridge over the course of the year as he met with fans, players and managers to discuss the issue.

Prince William will front a mental health documentary to be aired on the BBC next month, it was announced today. It will see the royal speak to managers including Frank Lampard, right

Among them is Frank Lampard, who opens up to the Duke about how as a player he was ‘stuck in the stone age’ when it came to mental health, and how there’s still a long way to go in how it’s dealt with at clubs.

Former England goalkeeper Joe Hart, who is now struggling to get into the first team at Burnley, appears in the film and discusses the effects of being forced to cope with a very public decline in his career.

Former Premier League footballer Marvin Sordell opens up about his struggles with depression, and Aston Villa’s Tyrone Mings talks about the pressures of living and performing in the public eye playing top level football.

The documentary will also hear from a group of bereaved fathers who use their local football team as a support network and safe space to talk.

The documentary, which will air as part of a programme to mark Mental Health Awareness Week, which takes place 18-24 May, builds on the Duke’s 2019 BBC1 film, A Royal Team Talk.

The programme saw the Duke meet with well-known faces from the world of football for an extraordinarily candid conversation about the importance of men’s mental health and mental fitness.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambirdge have made mental health awareness a cornerstone of their royal work.

Last year Prince William gave a presentation to Premier League chairmen to discuss his football-focused mental health campaign Heads Up.

In May 2019, Prince William launched Heads Up – which is a legacy of the Royals’ charity Heads Together – at Wembley.

He said at the time: ‘We all need to take care of our everyday mental fitness, and provide support to one another when we face setbacks, so we can be match fit for whatever lies ahead.’
