BAFFLED shoppers have accused Morrisons of rebranding Brussels sprouts to Yorkshire sprouts to appeal to Brexiteers.

Outraged Remainers slammed the supermarket on Twitter, while Brexiteer shoppers found the move amusing.

Scores of other shoppers have shared tweets, memes and posted jokes about the debacle.

The supermarket, which has a headquarters in Bradford, West Yorkshire, also had Lincolnshire and Scottish sprouts for sale during the festive period.

The notorious festive vegetable are named after the fact that they were first grown in Belgium in the 16th Century.

They are a member of the cabbage family and are high in vitamins A and C, plus they are a good source of iron.

One shopper said: "Brill! Brussels free Xmas", while another added: "Pretty cool that @Morrisons is replacing 'Brussels' with he sourced country".

A third added: "The Brexit revolution is under way. Brussels sprouts are henceforth to be known as Yorkshire sprouts!.

One unhappy shopper said: "Your renaming of Brussels sprouts to 'Yorkshire' sprouts would seem to be a political statement (there can be no other reason for it).

"That is your marketing decision, but please be sure that, as a result, I will no longer be supporting you."

Although, Morrisons had a much simpler reason for the name of the sprouts.

A spokesman for Morrisons said: 'Many of our customers are interested in knowing where their food comes from.

"Our Lincolnshire sprouts are called Lincolnshire sprouts because they are from Lincolnshire.

'Our Yorkshire sprouts are called Yorkshire sprouts because they are from Yorkshire. Many of our customers like to know that."

Earlier this week shoppers complained about supermarkets which looked like they'd been looted ahead of the festive period.

While furious Aldi shoppers slammed the supermarket for selling "rotten" turkeys.

While Asda was giving away FREE Christmas veggies on Christmas Eve to shoppers.
