Sophie, Countess of Wessex and Prince Edward attended Prince Philip’s funeral at Windsor Castle with their children yesterday. They were two of 30 guests who were allowed to attend in line with current coronavirus guidance.

Prince Philip had been styled as the Duke of Edinburgh since he married the monarch in 1947.

However, the title is likely to be passed to Prince Charles before becoming Prince Edward’s when Charles takes the throne.

This would make Sophie the Duchess of Edinburgh and the royals may take on more royal duties.

Sophie’s role has seemingly continued to grow while she has been in the Royal Family.

In recent years, the Queen’s daughter-in-law appears to have taken on more royal engagements.

Commenting on her style over the years, director of fashion buying at CHO clothing Gareth O’Rourke stated a change.

He said she has always had a unique fashion sense.

“Sophie, Countess of Wessex is known to be extremely hard working in her role to support the Queen and her involvement in various charity work,” he told Express.co.uk.

“She has always been known for her elegant yet simple fashion sense.”

In recent years, the mother-of-two has opted for some bold and colourful looks.

Her changing style could hint towards her growing role within the family, the expert added.

He said: “It’s no surprise that we haven’t seen her in flamboyant or stand out pieces up until recently.

“Her bold outfits could suggest her newly added responsibility within the Royal Family.

“It could also show the importance of her appealing to a wider audience now that she is in line to become the Duchess of Edinburgh.”

The Duchess of Edinburgh title has been held by the Queen as a courtesy title but it could soon go to Sophie.

Since marrying Prince Edward, Sophie has supported various causes which are important to her.

Gareth continued to say she may have chosen her looks to attract more attention to the charities she supports.

He added: “Bold fashion statements are a great way for the Countess of Wessex to gain media attention and raise awareness of her charity work.”

Previously Sophie Rhys Jones, she became the Countess of Wessex when she married Prince Edward.

They are both senior members of the Royal Family.
