A political reporter covering Donald Trump's trip to Japan was forced to exercise some creativity to abide by the strict dress code on the US president's tour.
The New York Times' White House correspondent, Annie Karni, shared the revelation with her Twitter followers after the "floor-length gown" requirement for journalists covering the president's state dinner with Japan's Emperor Naruhito left her reaching for the only dress in her wardrobe that met the criteria.
She wore her wedding dress (pictured left, above).
“The guidance that we needed a floor-length gown for tonight’s imperial banquet came hours before my flight departed. I only own one floor-length gown. So, here I am, pooling a presidential event in my wedding dress,” Karni tweeted to her followers on Monday, US time.
According to an article in the Times' weddings section, Karni married fellow journalist Ted Mann in 2015.
Karni also shared her observations on the cramped and inhospitable conditions in the press room at the dinner, as well as the tight turnaround between press engagements, filing deadlines back in the US and the dinner, offering a glimpse inside the less-than-glamorous side to being a travelling journalist.
"I changed in the bathroom about 10 minutes before the press vans were coming to pick us up,” Karni told People magazine.
The dress code also required women to wear close-toed shoes, another stumbling block for Karni, who was forced to don the same flats she had in her luggage all week on the trip.
Other than making entering and exiting vehicles a challenge, it was quite comfortable, she joked.
Karni is far from the first female journalist who has been challenged in performing her duties because of her clothes.
Last year, Australian ABC journalist Patricia Karvelas was evicted from the Press Gallery at Parliament House in Canberra after her top did not meet an antiquated rule regarding sleeve lengths.
And in 2010, former prime minister Kevin Rudd was accused of sexism after he commented on a hat worn by SMH correspondent Latika Bourke instead of answering her question at a press conference.
