SUMMER’S here, and while for some this means sun, sea and sand, others may find themselves constantly having to dodge mosquitoes, and other bitey bugs.

Speaking to Apartment Therapy, Stephanie Nguyen says that she used to be a mosquito magnet, but now has a number of tips that can help prevent bites, so no longer will you have to sit inside hiding from these creepy crawlies.

Clothing

Mosquitos are drawn to people who wear darker clothing, so switch to something more colourful as soon as the warm weather begins.

You may also want to consider layering outfits to further protect your skin – although depending on your location and temperature this could be rather difficult sometimes.

If the heat allows then wear a jacket when going for walks, especially near stagnant water.

You should avoid wearing any strong perfumes as these scents can attract mosquitos.

Deterrents

There are a number of deterrents you can use to discourage mosquitos from coming near you.

Lavender is arguably one of the best natural mosquito deterrents,  with a 2009 study finding that lavender oil possessed a 93% repellant rate against mosquitoes indoors and around a 53% repellant rate against mosquitoes outdoors.

Stephanie says she’s switched to  a lavender and mint shampoo and conditioner.

There are a number of options on the high street including the Paul Mitchell tea tree lavender mint duo and the Dr Organic lavender shampoo.

Stephanie also lights citronella candles and incense sticks, which repel insects and leave your home and garden smelling great.

Plants

There are a number of plants that can aid in repelling mosquitoes, although check if these will be suitable for your home first.

Citronella grass may repel these annoying buzzers, but it can also be toxic for pets so may not be the best option for you.

Stephanie suggests lemon balm, basil, and rosemary for a pet friendly, mosquito-free zone.

Essential items

Stephanie carries a number of items with her, throughout the summer months, in case bites still occur.

These summer essentials are bug spray, anti-itch cream and antihistamines.
