YouTube star Jim Chapman melted everyone’s hearts when he revealed he was engaged to his fiancée Sarah Tarleton – however, coronavirus has somewhat foiled their wedding plans.

They, like many others, have been forced to delay their big day after the pandemic hit.

However, chatting exclusively to Metro.co.uk as he partners with Gillette for Movember, Jim revealed why he’s not rattled by the delay, proving there are plenty of bright sides to the situation.

‘Yeah, at the moment it’s a bit of a question mark – not about will we do it [but] when will we do it,’ the 32-year-old pointed out, explaining that his two siblings are set to get married next year, so the couple are currently looking as far ahead as 2022.

‘What we’ve decided is we can’t control what’s going on outside our relationship,’ he continued. ‘We’re not in a rush, we’re playing it by ear.

‘We’d like to do it as soon as is feasible, but at the same time it doesn’t define our relationship. There are bigger things going on right now than our wedding!’

In fact, the two lockdowns in England have brought the couple closer together, with Jim revealing that he and Sarah lived with her parents for the first lockdown, which allowed him to find time with them both to set out his plans for the proposal.

He added of the time they’ve spent together during lockdown: ‘It’s definitely taught both Sarah and I what we do and don’t need in our lives.’

Jim also revealed that lockdown has allowed the pair to consider moving out of London, with the YouTuber explaining: ‘Both Sarah and I have certainly realised that perhaps we don’t need to be in London forever.

‘So we’re having conversations about where will we go when we’re ready to move out.’

Throughout the pandemic and lockdown, Jim has been open about the impact it’s been having on his mental health – but it took a while for him to get to a point where he’s comfortable opening up about it.

‘I had avoided talking about [mental health] until a couple of years ago – maybe three or four years ago when I had gone through a bit rough period myself, and had come out the other end,’ he recalled.

Revealing that it was a worrying statistic about male suicide that caused him to open up, he added: ‘I thought, “I can’t just not reference that, I can’t not have a conversation.”‘

He added: ‘For the amount of people that are watching me that may be going through a moment, if I literally just have a conversation, like “Hey listen, I’m feeling a bit off today” or “lately I’ve been a bit low” or whatever it may be, it might encourage them to go and tell their friends or family or a therapist or something and that’s really important. But there’s so much more to be done.’

Chatting about partnering with Gillette for Movember, Jim continued: ‘I just think it’s such an important cause, and one that has affected myself, and pretty much every man I know, mental health. Especially at the moment with lockdown and coronavirus and everything, people’s mental health has been really, really affected.

‘I’ve had my ups and downs. But having experienced it, and continue to experience it, I see a therapist very often still. Sometimes I’m fine and it’s just mental admin but sometimes I’m having a bit of a moment and I need to talk it through with someone.

‘It’s one of those things that is important, because often it’s just a conversation that you have that can stop it from spiralling out of control, so the more awareness you can bring to it, the better.

‘I was already looking around […] there are so many guys with moustaches, and it’s kind of like a symbolic thing. All the people I’m seeing with moustaches are all making a stand and it’s really nice to know that the conversation has been normalised.’

Jim Chapman is working with Gillette to support their 2020 Movember campaign, raising funds to support the mental health of frontline workers in the UK. To support go to Movember.com/Gillette.
