Marcus Rashford and his team mates Bukayo Saka and Jadon Sancho have been subjected to racial abuse after they failed to score during an intense penalty shootout last night. The 23-year-old footballer has now broken his silence about his efforts during the Euro 2020 tournament.

As part of a lengthy statement, Marcus said he “lacked confidence” during the final and felt as though he had let England and their fans down.

In view of his 10 million followers, he wrote: “I’ve had a difficult season, I think that’s been clear for everyone to see and I probably went into that final with a lack of confidence.

“I’ve always backed myself for a penalty but something didn’t feel quite right.

“During the long run up, I was saving myself a bit of time and unfortunately the result was not what I wanted.

“I felt as though I had let my teammates down. I felt as if I’d let everyone down.

“A penalty was all I’d been asked to contribute for the team. I can score penalties in my sleep so why not that one?”

Marcus said his miss had been playing on his mind all day as he went on to apologise to his supporters.

“All I can say is sorry. I wish it had gone differently,” he added.

The footballer went on to say he will “never apologise” for who he is as a person as he expressed how proud he was to play for the team.

He concluded his post, writing: “I’m Marcus Rashford, 23 year old, black man from Withington and Wythenshawe, South Manchester.

“If I have nothing else I have that.”

Steph McGovern was one of the first celebrities to share her support for the England star.

On Twitter, she wrote: “Well now I’m crying. Marcus, you are a legend.”

Other celebrities have flocked to social media to reassure Marcus about his efforts.

Piers Morgan commented: “You let nobody down, Marcus. NOBODY.

“In fact, I can’t think of anyone who has let England down less than you in the past year.

“So, stand tall, be proud of what you’ve achieved on & off the pitch – and go again.”

England may have lost to Italy, but fans have praised the Three Lions for getting to their first Euros final.

The team has only ever won the World Cup in 1966.

Today, manager Gareth Southgate said he needed to review his decisions about the game after receiving backlash.
