Simon Cowell has spoken out for the first time since popping the question to Lauren Silverman, appearing to confirm the news.

In a video obtained by The Sun the music mogul, 62, is stopped while on a bike ride with Lauren in Los Angeles, where he is asked whether the news of their engagement is true.

He responded: ‘What do you think?’, and when the reporter then congratulated Simon on the happy news, he replied: ‘I really appreciate that.’

Simon, who previously said he would never get married, is said to have proposed to Lauren, 44, on Christmas Eve in Barbados, with their seven-year-old son Eric and Lauren’s older son Adam present.

A source told The Sun: ‘Lauren was absolutely stunned and never in a million years expected Simon to pop the question. She burst into tears – happy tears – and obviously said “yes” straight away.

‘It was important to Simon that the kids were there too, as he adores them both and the family they’ve become.’

The source added that while Simon didn’t believe he was the ‘marrying type’ in the past, he realised Lauren is the ‘woman of his dreams’ and wanted to ‘put a ring on it.’

Lauren has since been spotted wearing a huge diamond ring reportedly worth $3.4million (£2.5million) while out and about in Malibu.

A source told People that the couple grew even closer over lockdown, explaining: ‘They have fun together, as well as being each other’s rock. They are both passionate but really do bring out the very best in each other. As a family, they all have such an incredible bond…

‘A lot of things have happened in the last few years and just like for everyone else in the world, these things have all been a reminder about what is precious to them’.
