Love Island winner Kem Cetinay and best friend Chris Hughes have opened up with their mental health struggle after leaving the show.

Kem, 23, and Chris, 26, starred on the hit ITV2 show in 2017 — with Kem going on to win the £50,000 prize fund with ex-girlfriend Amber Davies.

With the Caroline Flack fronted show back on screens for a fifth series, it has been surrounded by an mental health argument — with two former contestants taking their own lives since appearing on the programme.

Discussing their own relationships with mental health, Chris exclusively told OK! online: “To be honest with you at the start I struggled a bit because I took a while to adapt to the fact that you’ve got to switch on to a lot of things.“

Giving advice to current contestants, he continued: “I think just try and enjoy it as much as you can, be happy, try and not get too worked up about different things and make your happiness a priority, I think that’s a priority. This should definitely be a time that you enjoy.”

Kem added: “I think we’ve both spoken out about suffering with it but it’s just something you learn to adapt to and work on yourself and it’s important to stay close to your friends and family.

“We’ve always said that from the beginning that we would struggle 10 times more if we didn’t have good friends like each other and our mums around and dads and brothers who support us if we’ve having a bit of a bad day or week.

“You just kind of have to look at the bigger picture and take a step back, but we’re both doing well.”

Discussing the current series so far, Chris said: “I’m enjoying it. I think it’s going to kick off, I think people are going to start sticking it on a couple of people, I think probably in the next week or so it’ll start properly kicking off.

“I think the cast are good, obviously people are still finding their feet in there in terms of who they like and obviously there’ll be loads of bombshells dropped as we go on but it’s a good, solid cast.”

Kem added: “Yeah, the cast is good. It seems like most people are gripped already. Everyone says at the beginning it’s not as good as last year but within two weeks everyone’s as invested as they were the year before and the year before that.

“I think Curtis [Pritchard] is cool, I think he’s really cool, I like him. He’s a little bit different, he’s funny and a little bit nerdy and he’s quite endearing I think for a lot of people watching, he’s cool.”

Chris continued: “I quite like Michael [Griffiths], I think Michael’s cool. He’s a nice guy with a nice personality.”
