Dame Joan Collins, 88, has paid a heartfelt tribute to Sir Sidney Poitier following his death at the age of 94. Sidney is best known for his long and highly acclaimed acting career and holding the title as the first Black man to win an Academy Award in the Best Actor category.

Leading tributes to the late actor, Joan posted a candid photograph of the pair with the caption: “Rest in peace dear friend. A great gentleman and superb actor.”

And Carole echoed: “RIP gorgeous man and fabulous actor.”

Sidney’s most acclaimed films include The Defiant Ones, Blackboard Jungle and Lillies of the Field, for which he won the Best Actor Oscar in 1964.

Joan has previously discussed meeting Sidney for the first time at the Vanity Fair Oscars party in 2011.

In a room filled with A-Listers, Joan said Sidney was the biggest star there.

Writing for MailOnline at the time, the Dynasty star said: “To me, the biggest star there was the fabulous Sidney Poitier.

“[He] seldom goes to such events but was effortlessly and gracefully chatting and schmoozing with all and sundry.”

Sidney died at his home in Los Angeles on Thursday night.

His death was confirmed by Fred Mitchell, Minister of Foreign Affairs in the Bahamas, where Sidney grew up.

His cause of death remains unknown.

The actor’s passing has rocked Hollywood and tributes have poured in from those who knew him.

Barack Obama said on Twitter: “Through his groundbreaking roles and singular talent, Sidney Poitier epitomised dignity and grace, revealing the power of movies to bring us closer together.

“He also opened doors for a generation of actors. Michelle and I send our love to his family and legion of fans.”

Halle Berry echoed: “My dear Sidney, an enormous part of my soul weeps at your passing. In your ninety-four years on this planet, you left an indelible mark with your extraordinary talent, paving the way for Black people to be seen and heard in the fullness of who we are.”

The official account for The Academy added: “Poitier was barrier-breaking and an enduring inspiration who advanced US racial dialogue through his art. Few movie stars have had or will have the influence Poitier had both on and off screen.”
