Hugh Grant, 62, sparked backlash this week after being interviewed on the Oscars 2023 red carpet by model Ashley Graham, 35. Many blasted the Love Actually actor for being “rude” during the chat, but his former Music and Lyrics co-star Drew Barrymore, 48, has rushed to his defence.

After working with Hugh on the 2007 romantic comedy, Drew revealed that “grumpy Hugh” grew on her, after the actress initially felt confused by his behaviour.

During the latest episode of The Drew Barrymore Show, she told viewers: “If you know Hugh, that is his way of loving you.”

Reflecting on his seemingly standoffish chat with Ashley at the Academy Awards, Drew said: “People are like, ‘Oh, he’s such a curmudgeon and she’s so thrown.’ I’m like, no, that is Hugh Grant.

“You think you’re getting this charming movie star and what you really get is grumpy Hugh.

“And then you fall in love with grumpy Hugh.”

She went on to explain: “When he says that, I’m telling you, he is being absolutely funny.

“He doesn’t mean one negative thing about it. The person that Ashley Graham met on that carpet is the real Hugh.”

Acknowledging the awkwardness of the interview, Drew admitted that although they are good friends now, “it took her a second” to get used to Hugh when they first started working together.

She continued: “Probably like Ashley Graham on the carpet, like, ‘who am I dealing with?’ And then I was like, oh, no, I love you. I want to love you. You’re not letting me love you.

“As I got to know him, I was like I do love you. I love you for the real you.

“He is a hilarious, good human being.”

It comes after Hugh was quizzed by Ashley during ABC’s Countdown to Oscars 95 pre-show.

After asking Hugh about his fellow Oscar attendees, he told her he was excited to see “no one in particular”.

The star then shut down questions about his tuxedo by saying he “can’t remember” the name of his tailor.

He also dismissed Ashley’s question about his cameo in Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.

“Well I’m barely in it. I’m in it for 3 seconds,” he replied while discussing the Oscar nominated film.

Ashley followed up by asking Hugh if he had fun filming the movie, to which he drily replied, “almost”.

Hugh was slammed over his short answers online, with one viewer tweeting: “Don’t do the interview if you clearly don’t want to be interviewed.”

Another added: “Hugh Grant was so rude during his interview! Ashley Graham handled it with grace. His eye roll at the end was obnoxious!”

Fortunately, Ashley seemed less bothered about the exchange, telling TMZ: “You know what, my mama told me to kill people with kindness.”
