In 2018, Hugh confirmed he and Claire like their characters on-screen were dating during an interview with the Mail on Sunday.

At the time he said: “I am very, very happy, we are so very happy.”

In a separate interview, Claire spoke of how the pair had been together since 2017 but initially kept their relationship private out of respect for their families.

Hugh was previously married twice, having tied the knot with his first wife Miranda Carroll in 1987.

The actor and Miranda later went their separate ways in 1993, and three years later he married his second wife, Catherine Louise Abbot-Anderson.

Hugh and Catherine share son Freddie and daughter Meg although split in 2015.

Claire was also previously married to television director Charles Palmer who she has two sons with – William and Henry.

“The news didn’t come out until a year later, which was great.

“People said to us that someone will notice soon, but I kept telling them, ‘We’re both over 50. Why would anyone be interested in that?’

“We’ve got families we wanted to protect, but everybody’s pretty cool and happy with it.”

While appearing on Lorraine in 2019, Claire referred to Hugh as Pete on the show with Hugh having since admitted that Peter is his real name.

He explained to Lorraine in October of last year: “It’s an equity thing, so I had to change my name sort of in my early 20s to Hugh, and my real name is Peter Hugh Dennis, Hugh is my middle name.

“At that point, well I think it is still true, you couldn’t have two actors with the same name, so there was already a Peter Dennis.”

Saturday Kitchen Live will air today from 10am on BBC One.
