Chris Evans, 54, returned to Virgin Radio last Monday and according to the digital radio station’s stats, ratings were through the roof. Happy with the results, the host became suspicious and wondered if it was all down to his surgery.

I don’t know if people were tuning in to hopefully to her that I was still in hospital, never to come out…

The former BBC Radio 2 DJ recently had to undergo surgery to remove three kidney stones.

After experiencing a pain like no other, he was rushed to A&E where doctors determined the cause of his discomfort after sending him for a CT scan.

But upon his return to the Virgin Radio decks, their figures sky rocketed to record heights.

Speaking to his listeners on Monday morning, he encouraged listeners to tell him why they’re tuning in.

“I would love to know ow why you’re listening,” he said, before noting that his pal and fellow Virgin Radio presenter Graham Norton is “smashing it” in the ratings department.

But he was quick to point out that last Monday was a good day for his own show.

“Our streaming numbers last Monday were through the roof, which is the most we’ve ever had since we joined!” he beamed.

“Now, I don’t know if people were tuning in to hopefully hear that I was still in hospital, never to come out…” he joked.

“And I don’t know how Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday did, but it was pretty good on Monday!” he laughed.

DJ Sam Pinkham had been filling in while the breakfast show host was away, and Chris branded him a “super supporter”.

“He was very keen to see my grown-up nappies that I have been wearing and I have to say it’s not a look, but it’s a great vibe,” he admitted last week, giggling.

“I was going to keep a pair on for today and just pretended that I still needed them but I thought that would be very bad karma because I don’t need them anymore.

“But it’s been a bit of a journey, let me tell you!”

Kidney stones can develop in one or both kidneys and most often affect people aged 30 to 60, according to the NHS.

They’re quite common, with more than 1 in 10 people affected.

It can be extremely painful and can lead to kidney infections or the kidneys not working properly if left untreated.

“The kidney stones are no more,” he exclaimed.

“All three of them have been comprehensively annihilated!”

While Chris was away, Sam regularly updated listeners on his condition, reassuring them that the radio DJ was doing well and recovering at home.
