In new court documents filed on Aug. 18, Britney Spears asked for her father to be replaced as her conservator. In place of her father, she wants Jodi Montgomery, her temporary conservator and care manager, to take over.
Britney Spears has been in a conservatorship since 2008
After going through public personal struggles, Britney Spears was put in an involuntary conservatorship in 2008. Her father, Jamie Spears, was placed in charge of her finances and medical decisions. Since 2019, a #FreeBritney movement that questions the length of the conservatorship has been widely circulated and supported by numerous celebrities and fans of Britney Spears.
In a 2020 interview with As NOT Seen on TV Podcast‘s Drew Plotkin, her brother Bryan Spears spoke out about the conservatorship.
“She’s been in this thing for quite some time now. Obviously there was a need for it in the beginning,” he said. “Now they’ve made some changes and all we can do is hope for the best.”

Her father is no longer a permanent conservator
Due to health reasons, Jamie Spears stepped down as the permanent conservator, and the singer’s care manager Montgomery took over as a temporary conservator. He was set to take back over on Aug. 22, leading Britney Spears to request that Montgomery continue as her conservator.
“Britney does want the conservatorship of her as a person to end, but she was concerned that Jamie could attempt to have the temporary conservator removed,” a source told Us Weekly. “There has been significant improvement in Britney’s overall medical treatment plan, which has been attributed to no longer having her father in charge of her personal life.”
The source continued, “Britney and her dad have a complicated relationship… Jamie stepped in at a time in Britney’s life when she was extremely vulnerable to predators seeking to exploit her for financial gain. Over time, Britney began to resent her dad, who was truly in a no-win position. Jamie couldn’t be her dad, and it just got even worse when Jamie had health problems [in November 2018].”
What Jamie Spears thinks of the #FreeBritney movement
As the #FreeBritney movement picked up steam, Jamie Spears called out supporters of the movement in an interview with the New York Post.
“All these conspiracy theorists don’t know anything. The world don’t have a clue,” he said. “It’s up to the court of California to decide what’s best for my daughter. It’s no one else’s business… I have to report every nickel and dime spent to the court every year… How the h*ll would I steal something?”
He continued, “People are being stalked and targeted with death threats. It’s horrible. We don’t want those kinds of fans… I love my daughter. I love all my kids. But this is our business. It’s private.”
According to a new report by TMZ, nothing changed with Britney Spears’ conservatorship following a scheduled court hearing on Aug. 19. This was due to the fact the court hearing was “a scheduled status conference” and “certain legal docs need to be filed before her issues go before a judge.”
