If putting glue on your hair sounds wrong to you, you’re probably right.

A perfect example of where viral TikTok hacks should be taken with a pinch of salt is the ‘glue bangs’ trick – which isn’t loved by hair professionals.

But before we tell you what they think, first an explainer on the trend itself.

Viewed by nearly 70 million people on TikTok and counting, glue bangs involve putting glue on the ends of a fringe to keep hair in place and avoid flyaways.

Nicole Petty, hair expert at Milk + Blush, says: ‘”Glue bangs” is a trending TikTok hack that allows users to keep their bangs in place all day.

‘The hack, said to be used by celebs like Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez, requires you to apply a small amount of eyelash glue to secure your bangs to your forehead.’

First, you apply small dots of eyelash glue to the area of skin where you’d like the hair to sit. Next, you carefully press the fringe into the skin and check it’s secure before heading out for the day.

Nicole isn’t so sure it’s the best hack, though.

She explains: ‘Since appearing on TikTok, users have praised the hack for saving their hairdo from blustery winds.

‘But while it’s a hack that could come in incredibly handy in situations like on your wedding day or at an event where you can’t touch up your look regularly, you shouldn’t do it daily.

‘While a small amount of glue won’t be that damaging to your locks, it could be slightly difficult to wash out, and efforts to get it out may result in breakage to the ends of the fringe it’s come into contact with.

‘Plus, despite supposedly being safe, putting any glue onto your skin can’t be good for its health and may irritate sensitive skin types.’

She recommends, in order to do it safely and ensure your skin won’t react to it, to do a patch test at least 48 hours before trying the hack.

The good news is, there are better ways to tame flyaways.

Nicole says: ‘There are plenty of other ways to tame fringe flyaways which have been popular for several years, such as using strong-hold hairspray or texturising spray and an eyebrow brush.

‘After styling your bangs, shield your face and spray the hairspray from at least six inches away from your head and use an eyebrow brush to comb them into place before spraying a final time.

‘Another trick is in how you style it before going out. For example, using a round brush on wet bangs and curling them up and under will connect them and allow them to sit in position.

‘Meanwhile, you can use straighteners to keep them in place or invest in some clips if you’re partial to a 90s look.’

In fact, many people don’t realise that the reason bangs move throughout the day is due to oil build up.

‘To avoid this, ensure you have removed excess oils from your face during your morning skincare routine or keep a bottle of dry shampoo to hand during the day,’ she adds.
