We’re used to talent shows – we’ve seen dozens over the last couple of decades. And we’re certainly used to big-money game shows. You can’t move for them on both daytime and primetime.

But Simon Cowell’s latest brainchild serves up a combination of the two. Musical acts – including soloists, choirs and bands – compete against each other for a cash prize, with the victor choosing whether to take the dosh or gamble and “walk the line” to take on another contestant – with the chance of an even bigger pile of cash if they succeed.

Judge Alesha Dixon, 43, tells us more about the show, saying, “When Simon told me, I thought it sounded really interesting.

“So many things have been done, but this feels different. ‘Jeopardy’ is the best word to describe it. That anticipation – what are they going to do?”

Alesha is joined by fellow judges Dawn French, Craig David and Gary Barlow.

“Dawn is just a dream because I’ve loved and admired her from afar growing up,” she says. “She’s one of a kind, and she’s authentic, honest and real.

“Craig I have known my whole career, from the beginning of Mis-Teeq, as we were on the same label. Our paths have always crossed.

“And I am of course happy to say that Gary Barlow is now my friend,” she adds with a laugh. “When I was 13 years old and I was bunking off school to watch Take That perform, who knew how it would end up? We’ve climbed Mount Kilimanjaro together and we’ve written songs.

“We just crack each other up and to finally work with him on this panel has been a nice full-circle moment.”

The show is presented by Maya Jama and, despite its game show format, Alesha insists it’s about the skills as much as the thrills.

“The contestants are driven by the cash prize, but at the heart of it there are also some super-talented individuals,” she says.

“In some cases, they may have been too shy to perform on other talent shows, so the game show element has enabled
them to step out of their comfort zone. The panel is there to critique, but also to encourage.

“You’ve got to walk through that fear, walk the line and just trust that you have the talent to go all the way.”

Walk The Line starts Sunday 12 December at 8pm on ITV.
