CHRISTIAN ERIKSEN is hoping to make an incredible return to football in 2022 – but he's unlikely to ever play for Inter Milan again.

The former Tottenham midfielder, 29, collapsed in the first-half of Denmark's opening game at Euro 2020 following a cardiac arrest.

Eriksen was given life-saving treatment on the pitch as the Danish squad – led by heroic captain Simon Kjaer – formed a protective circle around him.

The Inter Milan ace was rushed to hospital where he would spend six days.

Eriksen was fitted with an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) – essentially a heart-starting device.

But Italian rules prevent players fitted with defibrillators from playing contact sport.

That means Eriksen is unlikely to ever play for Serie A champions Inter again.

According to reports in Italy, Eriksen is currently home in Denmark stepping up his rehabilitation as he targets a return to professional football.

Eriksen has been closely monitored for the past five months as doctors determine whether he will be able to continue with his career.

Should he be given the green light, he will not be allowed to play in Italy – but other nations have different rules.

Former Manchester United defender Daley Blind is currently playing for Ajax and Holland despite being fitted with a pacemaker having been diagnosed with heart muscle inflammation in 2019.

And Eriksen could also be offered a return by Ajax – for whom he played between 2010 and 2013 – say Gazzetta dello Sport.

Danish side Odense are also rumoured to be considering offering Eriksen a contract.

Inter Milan are aware they will not be allowed to play the midfielder and are believed to be helping him make the best decision for his career – suggesting they would be open to selling or releasing him from his contract in January.
